Robux – The Currency That Powers Roblox

Robux (formerly shown as R$) is the official virtual currency of the Roblox universe. First introduced on May 14, 2007, it existed alongside Tix (Tickets) until Tix was removed on April 14, 2016. The name “Robux” was coined by Shedletsky, combining “ROBLOX” and “BUX,” short for “bucks.”

Today, Robux stands as the platform’s primary and exclusive currency, used to purchase virtually all premium items — including avatar accessories, game passes, and user-generated content like microtransactions. The only exception is developer plugins, which are still priced in U.S. Dollars.

Players can obtain Robux by purchasing it with real money or earning it through game development and digital item sales. Smart management of Robux allows players to unlock premium features, customize their avatars, and elevate their overall gaming experience.

Over the years, Robux has become deeply rooted in internet culture, often compared with other popular game currencies such as Fortnite’s V-Bucks and Minecraft’s Minecoins. A notable example is the viral “Bobux” meme from late 2020, which humorously exaggerates the value of Robux within the gaming community.

On November 21, 2019, Roblox introduced a new Robux icon, replacing the old R$ symbol with a sleek golden hexagonal design. This change also eliminated confusion with the Brazilian Real (R$), which used the same abbreviation.
